Advice for my first IV infusion next week?

Hello All 

i am starting my IG therapy next week via IV in my local hospital

I wondered if anyone has any good advice for me? 

What to expect? 
How long does it take? 
Will it hurt? (Other than the needle) 
Anything to do before, during or after (I have read suggestions to up my fluid intake? / have read it can make you cold/shiver/itchy/headachy?)

My my doctor suggested that the first few infusions can be a bit rough as it's such a shock to your blood - did anyone else find this? 
He also said most people feel they have much more energy and a reduction in joint pain (please!!!!) - again what is the reality? 

I am anxious about the unknown but optimistic that I am finally going to get some treatment ! 

( i have actually chosen the subcutaneous route but due to delays I am starting with IV and starting this training in December)

I would echo the advice about taking something to do while you have your first infusion. It can be a bit of a shock to the system on your first go and so the rate the juice goes in is deliberately kept low. I remember having a bit of a reaction first time, which consisted of a high temperature and feeling faint. The nurses halted the infusion until these symptoms went away then continued it at a lower rate. It took about 5 - 6 hours I think. I now do home therapy and can get it done in 3 hours but that's after 16 years!

It can make you drowsy too - at least it does this to me. When I used to infuse in hospital I got embarrassed about nodding off in the clinic but after a few trips I just did it and wasn't bothered about it.
