Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and thought I'd share a bit about myself and ask for advice from others coping with CVID.
As a child I was never ill apart from the usual childhood illnesses, but when I was 16 studying for my GCSE's I developed a chest infection which would turn out to be severe. I thought it would clear by itself within a week or two, however thanks to the nagging and constant worry from my mother I finally gave in (stubborn and too ill!) and went to the GP who told me to get to A&E straight away. Once there they put me on a drip, bloods taken and tested for lots of things including celiac with 'magic eye' etc. After a few weeks and a dramatic weight loss due to pleurisy and pneumonia I was finally diagnosed with CVID.
My treatment began with 3weekly IVIG in my local hospice centre. Nursing staff were lovely and very caring, however they didn't know anything much about my condition. Throw into the mix being a 16year old (no phones or tablets etc then!) and being surrounded my people receiving chemo and elderly patients in their 60s,70's +, an 'alldayer' there wasn't the most exciting place I'd have liked to have spent my time at!!
I'm now 33 and a mum to two boys 4yrs & 6months and currently work as a secondary school teacher. Over the last 5years or so I do SCIG at home once fortnightly, which is sometimes difficult to fit into our busy lives but I do try to get it done at weekends.
Just wondered if anyone else has any issues with work, as in having to take time off due to infections? Any problems regarding being considered for promotion, or in general where managers/colleagues don't understand (or don't want to?!).
When pregnant with both boys I was very ill with chest infections (as this is how most of my infections present themselves) and towards the end of my pregnancies I had to take around 3/4months out off on sick. Although my work have been ok (most of the time) with my absences due to Dr sick papers etc not sure what more they can do and if a referral to Occupational Health will be worth fighting for??
Any info/own experiences/advice welcomed.
Lynne
