I must be more CVID aware.

Before I had my foot operation, five weeks ago today, I checked with the immunology nurse whether or not I should have precautionary antibiotics. The advice was if they usually give it to patients with this type of operation then yes, but otherwise my IgG is really good I don't need to worry. The consultant told me I would be given antibiotics, but that didn't happen.
At the fourth week check my wound was a little wet. By the time the doctor got to see it it had dried out so he made nothing of it. I didn't give it any thought until three nights ago when sharp pains in one of the toes where it joins the foot irritated me enough to keep waking me. (The pins in the three toes operated on go through to the foot.) By morning the area of foot near my toe hurt to touch. I couldn't see anything because of the bandages.
Yesterday I phoned the surgery to ask for a wound check. They told me they don't do wound checks after operations and gave me the number to the district nurse. The district nurse said to go back to the fracture clinic of the hospital that operated. (A round trip of 44 miles.) I phoned the fracture clinic numerous times hoping to check that I'd be seen but got no reply, so I phoned the district nurse back. She said to go to the local walk in centre. I phoned the walk in centre and asked for a wound check. They said to go to the district nurse. I phoned the district nurse and told her. She said they only see patients when referred by the hospital and if the wound is wet or infected and asked me if the wound is wet or infected. I said I don't know, that's why I need a wound check to find out why it's hurting. She said they have no appointments left and to go to the walk in centre and tell them they have to check it. I phoned the walk in centre and explained that I have cvid, which means I'm at easy risk of infection and need a wound check. They said to go straight away and I would be seen.
No obvious infection has been found but two wounds are wet and a small area of my foot is a bit red, though not hot. I have been given antibiotics just in case. Do infections begin with wet wounds? I now have a sore foot, sinus headache, made worse by my asthmatic cough and am annoyed and fed up with myself for being too casual and not ensuring they gave me antibiotics in the first place. I could kick myself, (if I could jump high enough to use my good foot) as I've realised however well we think we are and however good our IgG number we can never underestimate the power of the dreaded GERMS.
On that jolly note I'll leave you with my best wishes for a happy, healthy new year. (Cough, thump, ouch.) Glo
