Should I infuse whilst poorly?

Hi All.
I need some advice. I'm on holiday but have quite a bad sinus infection and have had to increase my asthma treatment. My daughter has arranged for me to see her GP later today for some antibiotics. I can't remember what I was told about infusing when we are unwell, whether to infuse whilst on antibiotics or not. My weekly infusion of subgam is due today. I can't get a reply from my immuno nurse. Does anybody know what might happen if I infuse whilst on antibiotics?

Hi, the problem is not really so much the antibiotics, but that your much more likely to develop adverse reactions when you infuse if your ill. I would wait until your immuno nurse replies before doing anything as they will know what to do.

I saw a thread on facebook a few months ago about this subject, i was told never to infuse while i have an active infection but a lot of people were told to infuse while they have an infection so Sam is right check with the nurse to be sure.

Hi Glo,
It's our clinic's rule that when we have an infection we don't infuse until we have taken antibiotics for at least 48 hours.
That was for IVIg,, which is immediately bio-active. I suspect that with sub-cut we could infuse 24 hours after the antis because it takes a while for the Ig to get into the bloodstream where it is likely to conflict with the infection.
Whatever we say here though, check with your nurse first.

Thank you John. I didn't get a reply from the nurse. After a few hours of waiting and talking it over with my husband and daughter we decided to go ahead with the infusion. I remember being told by the doctor not to infuse if I have a raised temperature. As my temperature was normal I thought it would be okay and thankfully it was.

I'm going to have a word with the nurse when I can get her on the phone as I need to know who I can turn to when she isn't available. It's great being able to treat myself at home but not so great when you can't get an answer when you need it.

I know they say not to infuse when you have an infection but if i waited to be infection free i would never infuse as i am never infection free, i am always pre treated before my infusions and if ime not i react every time, i feel if i dont carry on with the infusions the infection will get worse as my counts drop due to needing an infusion . As long as your team are aware of your problems and pre-treat you I'm sure that is OK. The problem comes when we infuse at home and don't have the nurses around, then the decision to go ahead is ours alone and that can be daunting.I think the antibiotic rule still applies though, and now that I am on home therapy i would always delay my infusion for a day or so while I start the abs!
That is assuming we keep stocks of abs at home and feel we can make the decision to start them ourselves, which I think most of us do!
