You Should Try Getting Out More

When feeling sorry for myself
Illness forcing me to stay in
My social life had breathed its last
As the invitation hit the bin.

What was the point of accepting
As when for way too many years
With the fun of invitations
Came a bad head and chest and tears.

Whilst everyone's out having fun
I jot down thoughts to pass the time
I'm quite used to staying indoors
I'll just write myself a rhyme.

Then diagnoses and infusions
Brought promise of improved health
That most longed for thing in my life
More than any measure of wealth.

"You really should try going out"
My family and friends all say
"A change is bound to do some good
More than staying in every day."

When feeling good I limped along
To a show then a music club,
The next week to a restaurant
Then a drink in a lively pub.

I'd forgotten how good health felt
Until my treatment took its part
Those outings made my spirits soar
So now I've had a change of heart.

Now my head and chest are bad again
So from outings I must refrain
But I now have hope for good days
When my spirits will soar again.

Whilst everyone's out having fun
I'm okay with passing the time
Just sitting jotting down my thoughts
And using them in this rhyme.
