Greetings , one and all.
I was 18 months old , screaming like a banshee when The GP suspected that I was Immuno deficient, This was in 1963 So for that reason alone I consider myself fortunate to still be here. After initial tests I was diagnosed HypoGammaglobulinaemic , So my youth, was spent with upper respiratory infections, initially IM injections of Gammaglobulin, and Penicillin, Administered weekly by my mother , a trained nurse, and regular trips to local hospitals for the monthly blood letting (was NOT a fan of that). I assume that I had a pre-nasal drip as Father nick-named me " Charlie Green trickle".
Schooling was troublesome as I wore Hearing aids in both ears and obviously with discharge running from every pore conceivable, was never the first choice to be sat next to in class.During these times we had moved twice to enhance Fathers career and I came under the auspices of Professor Soothill ( a legend in his field) in GOS. One bonus was never succumbing to the childhood infections such as Mumps, Measles, Scarlet Fever etc, which my siblings had
In 1971, I was admitted to GOS for a clean out,Under General anasthestic, ENT systems were flushed out and following Op I was started on a revolutionary new drug called Septrin ( Now known as Cotromotrixole) This is was the start of a whole new life for me, I could see, hear, smell, all un-aided. Life returned to some sort of normality,Weekly injections and a daily dose of peppermint flavoured syrup. Most of my teen years were uneventful, I had severe Acne, which might have been due to the climate I was living in or Fathers own propensity for having suffered it, Also a spell of Excema on my feet. During the time of Having my backside looking like a target at a shooting range, I twice had Anaphylactic shock, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
So onto my career. I always said I wanted to work outdoors and with animals, So became a Herdsman... A contradiction of environments if ever there was one, but apart from the three episodes of Bacterial Meningitis caused by Campylobacter in Raw Milk, (A workers bonus), and the one incident where I came of a motorbike at 60mph on a Cow infested toilet road, resulting in chronic rapid infection in my arm, I had one of the healthiest lives ever... Not being cooped up in an office being susceptible to other peoples germs.
Around 1984, My medication was changed to IVIG, Partly due to the need to become more independent and the 10ml dose being administered weekly was becoming too painful, also I was starting to show early signs of arthritis.
Which is pretty much where I'm at now,
Around 2002 I was up-graded to XLA, and my goal now in life is to be the eldest survivor with this variation.Anyone older please feel free to state your age.
These are the highlights,
Current health status... 11 month recovery, still ongoing, to a Broken right Tibia, a workplace injury, Post-nasal drip causing mucosal cough, Dry-eye syndrome(convinced it's related to the sinusitis), IBS, and depression.. so all in all ...pretty good nick.
I think there should be a thread on here for the mental aspects of what we are going through, there might be one, but will certainly start one if I can find no evidence of one
