Grrr... I HATE Flucloxacillin...

So I've managed to get an infected site from my subcutaneous insulin pump = a somewhat large, painful lump in a very uncomfortable place which was starting to form an abscess. In fact its the first infection that I've had for 6 months, and of course I get given a 10 day course of 500 mg Flucloxacillin (which is highly effective against these sort of infections) to get rid of it...

I absolutely HATE Flucloxacillin as you have to take it on an "empty stomach", which means 2 hours after last eating, and you can't eat for an hour after taking it! You really have to plan when you eat around when you take it (4 times a day), and I would happily fund somebody personally if they could create a formulation which is just as effective on a "non-empty" stomach.

Anyone else got any antibiotics, or medicines they find just SO annoying?

Sorry you have an infection, at least you have high hopes that the Flucloxacillin antibiotic will clear it up. Listening to the news today, it's a bit scary that the abs we DO have are getting to be less and less effective and there are no new ones in the pipeline!
I hate all the abs I take, they all seem to have a negative side to them, but from now on I will just be thankful that they mostly work!

I wouldn't call myself "ill" so to speak, its just damn annoying having the lump on my backside! Its not quite as painful now though, and its no longer growing so the antibiotics are doing their work. For skin infections Flucloxacillin is one of the best antibiotics its just so annoying having to take it on an empty stomach.

The "getting less and less effective" is probably a bit of an overstatement though: for hospital related infections such as MRSA that's certainly true, but not really for community based infections of the chest, urinary tract, skin etc which is one fact that a lot of the press are overlooking. There are new antibiotics in the pipeline, most of them are for targeting very specific infections though which is why there's being so much alarm about the growing resistance by certain organisms against widely used antibiotics.

Hi Sam

Amoxicillin are the same one hour before and 2 after meals but my immo said I can take them both in the morning which suits me because I'm not a breakfast person. Maybe you can do something similar but check with your doctor :-) it must be harder for you especially trying to balance your sugar levels,
I did go through a stage where I really resenting doing infusions especially when I have been well for a long time but I know what it was like before and I never want to go back to that.

I hope you have finished your course of antibiotics and all is well.

Well I've now just taken the last capsule - they were 4 times a day so it wasn't really possible to take them all during one time of day. I'm just happy that I've finished the 10 day course now, and the swelling around the site is gone (minus a small bit of hard skin - which is normal).
